Radiant Barrier greatly reduces heat flow into your home due to radiation.
The sun's heat enters your home in three primary ways:
- Convection (when you open doors or windows and let hot air in),
- Conduction (the outer walls and attic deck warm up and conduct the heat to the inner walls and ceiling),
- and Radiation (the hot roof produces radiant heat that heats everything in the attic).
Reducing these heat sources improves the efficiency and performance of your air conditioning system. The effects of Conduction are reduced by adding Attic Insulation, and the effects of Radiation are reduced by adding Radiant Barrier.

Radiant barrier consists of a material (usually reflective) that is applied to the underside of the roof deck to prevent radiant heat from entering the attic. Instead, the radiant heat is reflected back to the roof deck and out to the outdoors.
The result is that the attic deck and all of the objects in the attic (including any air conditioning equipment in the attic) stay cooler because they are not absorbing all of that radiant heat.
