The ultimate duct system.
When it comes to duct systems, zone control systems are the ultimate. Zone control systems consist of motorized dampers that control the flow of air through each supply duct. The rooms of the home are then divided into "zones", and each zone has its own thermostat. The thermostats and dampers are wired to a central control board.
When one of the zone thermostats signals that cooling is needed, the control board opens only the dampers for that zone. The result is that the temperature throughout the house is more uniform. For instance, for a two-story home where the upstairs is almost always warmer than the downstairs, the upstairs can be placed on a separate zone. This will cause the upstairs to receive more cooling than the downstairs, keeping the two levels at nearly the same temperature.
Zoning also works equally well for heating, keeping your downstairs as warm as the upstairs.

Greater control brings greater efficiency.
With more thermostats throughout the house, zone control allows you to selectively air condition the parts of the house that actually need it, rather than air conditioning the entire house any time one area needs it. This saves energy and can actually allow you to air condition your home with smaller equipment. Smaller equipment uses considerably less energy.
Because each zone has its own thermostat, each zone can be set to a different temperature to accommodate different people and lifestyles.
