No metal-framed air filters!
Metal-framed air filters or electrostatic air filters as they are also called, trap 99.9% of the dust in the air. At least that is what they claim.
They also block 99.9% of the air trying to get through the filter!
They are simply too restrictive.
They are also hard to clean and must be cleaned often, which means they end up even more restrictive over time.
This makes your system work longer and harder, raising you electric bill and reducing the air flow to your rooms.
The big misunderstanding about "Air Filters"
Yes, we are talking about those air filters that go in the wall or ceiling of your home.
Most people think of air filters as useful but not a "big deal".
In fact, improper use of air filters can cause thousands of dollars in damage and repairs! You see, the air filter is there to keep the air conditioner, heater and air ducts clean.
Over years of use, dirt, dust, lint, mold, algae, and all types of other things get into the central air system. Think of you air conditioner and heater as the biggest vacuum cleaner you've ever seen!
It runs day and night, all year round, sucking the air in and blowing it into all the rooms.
When the filter gets dirty, the fan has to suck harder. This causes the system to work harder and run a lot longer than it normally would. This wears out the unit and raises your electricity bill.
When the filter gets real dirty, the fan can actually suck the filter into the air duct!
Expensive repairs and replacement costs are often blamed on clogged or missing air filters!

What is "Merv"
Most quality air filters now come with a standard rating of how well they filter the air.
The Merv number tells you how well the filter works. The higher the number the smaller the particles the filter traps. Merv 11 traps finer particles than Merv 8.
Some filters will even trap cigarette smoke. Smoke is just a very fine particle!
